From Deidesheim to the Eckkopf
The hike starts at our sister hotel Kaisergarten (corner of Weinstraße 12).
Turn left towards the vineyards, along the Kaisergarten, continue up the Hohlweg “Große Hohl” and after the ascent take the second path on the left. Follow this path to the Sensental hiking parking lot. At the parking lot, a path on the right (marked with a red dot) leads to St. Michael’s Chapel. From there, you have a wonderful view over the municipality of Deidesheim as far as the Rhine plain.
Following the signposts further on, you reach the “Heidenlöcher” on the summit of the Kirchberg. Arriving at the “Heidenlöchern”, you immediately notice the weathered walls, which are the foundations of former houses. Archaeologists believe that this mountain fortress was built for protection in the late Carolingian period. However, precise details about the name and the reasons for its construction have unfortunately been lost in history.
The hike continues in the direction of Eckkopf: first follow the red dot, which later turns into a white dot. The Eckkopf tower is just under 3.5 km away. From the top of the tower, you can enjoy a magnificent view over the Palatinate Forest. At weekends and on public holidays, the local hut is run on a voluntary basis by various associations and invites you to linger and enjoy traditional Palatinate dishes.
After a little refreshment, the hike continues along the white dot to the “Weißer Stich”. Then follow the blue-yellow markings half-left back towards Deidesheim. Once you reach the bottom of the valley, walk about 30 meters on the road that turns sharply left and then half right on the path that is still marked with the blue and yellow signs. This leads directly to the Deidesheimer Hütte, the Waldschenke in the Mühltal.
The path leads along the Weinbach stream to the edge of the forest and then continues along the farm track before turning left onto the second concrete path. Continue straight ahead on this road, past the “Oase im Paradiesgarten” outdoor pool, until you reach Schwimmbadstraße. This merges into the street “Im Ringgarten” and joins Friedhofweg and then Platanenweg on the left. You return to Hotel Kaisergarten via Bennstraße.
